De-registration advice

We are re-publishing this blog for all home, EU and international students affected by de-registration.

It follows on from our previous posts below, which explain tuition fee payment and academic options such as interrupting studies, as well as the de-registration process:

Options prior to de-registration

The deadline for full payment of tuition fees including any fee for late payment and/or any fee for paying in instalments was Wednesday 31 January 2024.

Our understanding is:

  • students who failed to pay their agreed fee by 31 January will have been contacted by Queen Mary Student Records and given a further 10 working days to pay
  • the final deadline for payment will be 5pm on Monday 26 February. This is the date funds will need to have cleared into Queen Mary’s account, not simply the date when payment is initiated
  • actual de-registration will take place on Tuesday 27 February

If you will be making payment close to the deadline, you can contact the Fees Office, and ask them to check whether your funding (such as from your sponsor or from Student Finance England) is visible on their system.

Although it is normally not possible to obtain an extension to the 26 February deadline, you can let the Fees Office know more about your circumstances and that you are experiencing difficulties by:

  • emailing: fees-dereg@qmul.ac.uk attaching any relevant documents; or
  • going in person to the Fees Office on the Ground Floor of iQ East Court (formerly known as Scape East), 450 Mile End Road, London, E1 4GG, taking any relevant documents with you

Although highly unlikely, some students with individual circumstances may be offered an extension at the discretion of Queen Mary such as:

  • students affected by world events where access to expected funds has been temporarily disrupted
  • students with a non-standard payment schedule where the expected funds (usually from an official international sponsor) will not be paid before the deadline

Please note that advisers from Advice and Counselling will not be able to negotiate or authorise extensions to the final deadline on your behalf, so please contact the Fees Office directly as above to discuss your situation.

Options following de-registration

Immediate re-instatement

If you are de-registered, you will be given the opportunity to appeal. Our understanding is that if you pay your outstanding fee plus the £150 late payment fee, and submit an appeal within the appeals window of 21 calendar days, you can normally be immediately re-instated. Our understanding is that this deadline is Friday 15th March at 5 pm. However, Student Records will email you to explain the appeals process and the exact deadline for payment.

You will need to refer to your payment invoice from the Fees Office which sets out what you will need to pay to clear your total outstanding balance. You can also view your account under under the My Finances section of MySiS.

Please note, to be considered for re-instatement, you will have to both pay what you owe, including the late payment charge of £150 and appeal within the appeals window.

Re-instatement after 12 months

If you cannot pay your outstanding fee within the appeals window, but you can pay this and a £250 re-instatement fee by July 31 2024, you can normally be re-instated twelve months following your de-registration with no further fees to pay.
